On this page
The portal and this handbook use a small set of words, always with the same meaning. This page explains each one in a sentence or two.
TV, display, and device
These three are easy to mix up, but they are different things, and each one lives in a different place in the portal.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| TV or monitor | The hardware on the wall: the TV in the shop window or the monitor above the counter. |
| Display | The entry in the portal for one TV or monitor. Under Displays, you give it a name, assign it content, and check its status. Each display takes one seat in your contract. |
| Device | The machine that produces the picture, such as a player. It appears under Devices. One device can drive more than one display. |
| Player | Our own playback device. The Player Lite drives one display, the Player Pro two. Both run SzeneraOS. They are announced, and you can register your interest under Settings › Organization › Billing. |
| Web display | A display that runs in a browser on a computer, tablet, or smart TV. There is no device of ours behind it, so remote maintenance isn't available. |
| TV app | Our app for Fire TV sticks and other Android devices. It starts the display on its own and can take screenshots, but it has no remote maintenance either. It isn't in the Amazon Appstore yet. |
| Video wall | Several displays that together show one picture. Each display in it keeps its own seat. |
One display per TV or monitor, one device per machine: Two displays share a Player Pro, and the third runs as a web display on a tablet.
Keeping them apart tells you what an action affects. A restart always reaches the whole device, so every display on it goes dark for a moment. Remove display frees the seat and leaves the device in place.
On the device
The device record lists the software on a device. Not every device has every part.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Display software | The software that plays your scenes, playlists, and files. Every device has it. |
| Host | What starts the display software: on a player, the kiosk session of SzeneraOS, and on a Fire TV, our TV app. |
| Remote maintenance | Restart, update, logs, and screenshots from a distance. Only players with SzeneraOS have it. |
| SzeneraOS | The operating system of our players. It updates itself and goes back to the previous version if an update fails. |
Content
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| File | An image, video, or document (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) that you uploaded to the Library. |
| App content | A configured app as an entry of its own in the Library, such as “Weather Altona branch”. You set it up once and use it in scenes and playlists. A change applies everywhere it runs. |
| Library | The stock of everything your displays can show: your files and your app contents. It is in the sidebar in the Content group. |
| Scene | A designed layout of files, app contents, and widgets, made under Scenes. |
| Zone | A part of a scene. A zone plays one content, a sequence of its own, or a playlist. The Main zone sets how long the scene runs. |
| Format | The aspect ratio of a scene, such as 16:9. A scene has no pixel resolution: Each display shows it as sharp as the TV or monitor and your package allow. |
| Widget | A building block in a scene, such as text, an image, a clock, or the weather. Apps add their own widgets. |
| App | An add-on from the store under Apps. It brings widgets, live data, or whole new areas. |
| Template | A ready-made scene. You create your own scene from it and change it as you like. |
| Draft | A scene you are still working on. You see it in the editor, but no display shows it yet. |
| Published | The version of a scene that displays actually play. Your changes reach the displays only when you publish. |
| Playlist | Scenes, files, and app contents in a set order, each shown for a set time. Made under Playlists. |
| Data source | A place that Szenera regularly fetches data for your apps from, such as the news of your intranet or a table. Made under Data sources. |
| Connection | The access to an account or service such as Microsoft 365, Google, or Grafana that data sources use. Set up under Settings › Organization › Connections. |
| Placeholder | What a display shows while nothing is assigned to it: your organization's brand. It is not an error. |
Schedules
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Program | The plan of what runs when, made under Programs. Each display gets one. |
| Base program | What a program plays by default, whenever no program entry applies. |
| Program entry | Content for a specific time within a program, such as the lunch menu from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
| Override | Content that temporarily replaces the program on a display. You start it with Show something else now and stop it with End override. |
| Off air | A planned blank display. The display stays dark on purpose, it isn't broken. |
| Assignment | What a display plays: a program, or a single scene, playlist, or file. It is set on the display, not in the program. |
Team and billing
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Organization | Your business, with all its locations, displays, content, and team members. One account can belong to several organizations. |
| Role | A named set of permissions. The built-in roles are Owner, Manager, and Member. Each account has at most one role. |
| Direct permission | A single permission granted to or withheld from one person, on top of their role. |
| Seat | One display that your contract covers. Each display takes one seat, even the second display on the same device. |
| Proof of play | A file from Analytics that shows what ran on which display and when, for example to show an advertiser. |
