# Menu board and counter

TVs above the counter show your menu with prices, change by themselves between breakfast and lunch, and mark sold-out dishes the moment someone taps their phone. You maintain the menu in one place, and every display shows the current state.

> **Type:** guide
> **For:** cafés, restaurants, bakeries, canteens, and snack bars
> **Prerequisite:** an account in the portal and the Pro package for the Menu board app

## What you need

| What | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| TVs | One to four TVs side by side above the counter, in landscape or portrait |
| Device | A web display in each TV's browser today. A player once it can be ordered. |
| Package | Pro, which includes the Menu board app |
| Apps | Menu board. For promotions, a scene with your own pictures. |

## How to set it up

1. **Create your menu** in the Menu board app, with categories such as breakfast, lunch, and drinks, and each dish with its price and allergens, see [Menu board](/apps/menu-board).
2. **Give categories a time window** if they apply only at certain times, such as breakfast until 11:30.
3. **Place the widget in a scene** with the **Board** template. Switch on **Show categories only at their time**, and the board changes by itself.
4. **Spread the menu across several TVs** with **Spread across**, one scene per TV with its own **This part**.
5. **Assign the scenes** to the displays, see [Assign a program to a display](/displays/assign-program).

## Tips from practice

- **Mark dishes as sold out from the phone.** Staff open the Menu board on their phone and switch **Sold out today**. At 5 a.m., everything is available again.
- **Plan new prices ahead.** With **Plan a change for a set date**, new prices start on the first of the month without anyone staying late.
- **Run promotions as program entries.** A happy hour from 17:00 to 18:00 goes into a program entry with a promotion scene, while the board runs as the base program, see [Show content at specific times](/programs/create-program-entry).
- **Several branches, one menu.** A menu can apply to selected locations and carry different prices per location.
