# Remote maintenance: send commands to a display

From the portal, you can reload a display's content, take a screenshot, make the display light up so you can find it, or switch the TV off and on. A restart always affects the whole device.

> **Type:** guide
> **For:** anyone who looks after displays from a distance
> **Prerequisite:** the Owner or Manager role
> **Where in the portal:** **Displays** › display › **Diagnostics**

## Steps

1. Open **Displays**, choose the display, and switch to the **Diagnostics** tab.
2. Under **This display**, choose an action. Each one says in a line what it does.
3. Watch the status of the command. It moves from **sent** to **accepted** to **done**.

| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Reload content** | Loads the display's content again. The picture turns white for about two seconds. |
| **Screenshot** | Takes a picture of what the display shows right now. |
| **Identify** | Makes the display light up for a few seconds so you can find it on site. |
| **Screen off** and **Screen on** | Puts the TV on standby or wakes it up again. The device keeps running. |

Under **The device behind it**, you find **Restart**, **Fetch log**, and **Check for updates**. They affect the whole device and every display on it, see [Maintain a device remotely: restart, log, update](/devices/maintain-device-remotely).

An action appears only if the device supports it. A web display, for example, takes screenshots only with the display extension and can't switch the TV off.

## Check the result

Below the actions, **Commands** lists the latest commands for this display and its device. A screenshot opens with **View**.

## If something goes wrong

| Symptom | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| The device isn't reporting right now | The device is offline. | Commands wait and run as soon as the device reports again. If that takes too long, they expire. |
| **no answer** | The device didn't respond in time. | Check whether the device is reporting, then send the command again. |
| An action is missing | The device or the TV doesn't support it. | For switching the TV, see [Set up the TV for all-day use](/devices/tv-settings). |
| The actions are grayed out | Your role doesn't allow commands. | Ask someone with the Owner or Manager role. |
