# Weather

The Weather app shows the current conditions, the next hours, and the coming days, at each display’s location or for a fixed place. We fetch the data, so you need no account or key.

> **Type:** app
> **For:** anyone who wants the weather in a scene
> **Prerequisite:** the app installed, and permission to edit scenes. For the weather at a display’s location, the display needs a location with an address.
> **Where in the portal:** **Apps** › **Discover apps** › **Weather**. The widget is in the scene editor under **News & info**.

## What the app shows

The app comes with one widget: **Weather**. It always shows place, temperature, and conditions. When switched on, the next hours, the next days, and the day’s high and low are added.

The widget arranges itself to fit its frame in the scene. As a small tile, it shows only the essentials. In landscape, the hours are added, and wider still, the days too. As a column, everything is stacked, and as a bar, everything sits in one row. What has no room in a frame drops out in a fixed order: first the days, then the hours, then high and low. Dragging wider never removes anything: A tall bar arranges itself as in landscape as long as that shows more.

When you insert it, six templates are available, each with a suitable starting size: **Compact**, **With hours**, **With days**, **Full day**, **Column**, and **Bar**. One click on the app inserts **With hours**. You can then change the size freely.

The place is initially the **Display location**: The same scene shows each branch’s own weather. For this, the widget uses the coordinates of the location you have set for the display. If you prefer to always show the same place, choose a fixed place.

Conditions and weekdays appear in your organization’s language. The hours are in the local time of the place.

Two examples: A chain with ten branches creates one scene with **With hours**, and each display shows the weather outside its door. A medical practice puts a **Bar** along the bottom edge of its waiting-room display.

## Settings

Open the settings with the gear icon on the selected widget. They are on the tabs **Content**, **Appearance**, and **Data**. The toolbar also offers **Template** and **Colors**, plus the **Background**.

| Setting | Tab | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Place** | **Data** | **Display location** or **Fixed place**. For a fixed place, you search from two characters on, and the suggestions appear in the form `Berlin (DE)`. | Display location |
| **Fallback place** | **Data** | Applies to displays whose location has no coordinates. Without a fallback place, the widget shows a note there. | none |
| **Hourly forecast** | **Content** | The next hours with icon and temperature. | On |
| **Next days** | **Content** | The coming days with low and high on a shared scale. | On |
| **High and low** | **Content** | The span of today beside the conditions. | On |
| **Colors** and **Font** | **Appearance** | **Style of the app**, **Brand colors**, or **Custom** colors, plus the font. See [Configure widgets](/content/configure-widgets). | Style of the app |
| **Background** | **Appearance** | **Conditions** colors the background according to the weather, and **Light**, **Dark**, **Glass**, and **Transparent** stay the same. Glass works well over pictures and videos. | Conditions |
| **Corners** | **Appearance** | **Rounded** grows with the frame, **Sharp** ends flush. | Rounded |
| **Units** | **Content** | Under **Advanced**: **Metric (°C)** or **Imperial (°F)**. | Metric |

Content that is switched on but for which the frame is too small stays switched on. The window then says that it is hidden in this frame. Drag the frame larger and it appears.

**Reset** restores the chosen template. Place and background stay as you chose them, and the sentence next to the button says so.

## Limits

- *One place per widget.* For several places, you insert several widgets.
- *Location with an address.* The weather at the location needs coordinates. They are created when you set an address at the location.
- *We handle the fetching, not the display.* The display needs no connection of its own to the outside. Widgets for the same place share one fetch, which is valid for half an hour.
- *Data freshness:* If the data is older than half an hour, its time appears small at the bottom edge, for example **as of 11:20 AM**. After two hours, it says **outdated**.
- *Hours in three-hour steps.* Depending on the weather service, the hours come at intervals of one or three hours.
- *No account of your own, no values of your own.* You can neither set up an account of your own with the weather service nor enter readings by hand.
- *Outside requests* carry only the coordinates of the place, rounded to about one kilometer. Address, name of the location, and other data of your organization are not transmitted.
- *Source at the edge.* The weather service’s licenses require crediting it. It appears small at the bottom edge and stays legible in the bar too.

## If something goes wrong

| Symptom | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| The widget shows **No weather data for this location yet**. | The display has no location with coordinates, and there is no fallback place. Right after switching on, it can also be the first fetch. | Set a location with an address for the display ([Create locations and assign displays to them](/displays/create-locations)) or choose a fallback place in the settings. |
| The widget shows **No place selected yet**. | **Place** is set to **Fixed place**, but none is chosen. | Search for a place in the settings and select a suggestion. |
| The search reports **No results**. | The name is too short, spelled differently, or unknown. | Type at least two characters, try the official place name, or choose a larger place nearby. |
| The widget shows **Weather data temporarily unavailable**. | There is no valid state yet, before the first fetch or after a longer fault. | Wait a moment. If it persists, check the display’s connection ([Monitor your displays](/displays/fleet)). |
| Hours or days are missing. | The frame is too small for them, or the content is switched off. | Drag the frame larger or choose a template with more room. |
| The temperature is shown in Fahrenheit. | **Units** is set to **Imperial (°F)**. | Under **Advanced**, switch to **Metric (°C)**. |
| The widget cannot be inserted. | The app is not installed, an update is waiting for your decision, or it shows **Not in your package**. | Check the status under **Apps** ([When an app doesn’t work](/help/apps-troubleshooting)). |
