# Install or book an app

Installing an app takes a minute: open its listing, check what it does with your data, agree, and its widgets appear in the scene editor. A paid add-on is booked first. If you aren't the Owner, you ask the Owner with one click.

> **Type:** guide
> **For:** the Owner. Managers ask the Owner instead, members can only browse.
> **Prerequisite:** your package includes the app, or you book it as an add-on
> **Where in the portal:** **Apps** › **Discover apps** › app › **Install**

## Steps

### Install an app

1. Open the app's listing and click **Install**.
2. In the dialog, check **Data & access**. Expand **Roles & permissions** to see who on your team may use the app.
3. If the app comes with terms, read the **Important note**. **The app's full terms** opens the full text in a new tab.
4. Tick the checkbox to agree, and click **Install**.

> **Tip:** Look at **Runs on** in the listing first. If an app doesn't support the device type of a display, assigning it there still works, but the portal warns with **Not everything runs on this display**.

### Book a paid app

For an **Add-on**, the button says **Book and install** and leads to the **Order** page. After **Order accepted.**, click **Install now** to return to the app and finish the installation as above. An add-on is billed pro rata for the rest of the current period, then monthly, and you can cancel at the end of any month. More in [Change your contract: displays, package, add-ons](/billing/change-contract).

### Ask the Owner to install an app

As a manager, you see **Ask the owners to install** instead of **Install**.

1. Click **Ask the owners to install**.
2. Under **A sentence for the owners**, say what you need the app for. This is optional, with up to 280 characters.
3. Click **Send request**.

Every Owner receives the request under **Notifications** and by email. The same request goes out at most once in seven days.

## Check the result

The portal reports **App installed** and opens the app's page. Its widgets are in the scene editor palette, under the same category as in the store. In **My apps**, the app shows **Ready** until a scene uses it.

## If something goes wrong

| Symptom | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| **Install** stays gray in the dialog | The checkbox isn't ticked. | Tick the checkbox. |
| **Ask the owners to install** instead of **Install** | Only the Owner may install. | Send the request, or talk to the Owner. |
| “Your role cannot install apps or ask the owners to do so.” | Your role may neither install nor ask. | Talk to the Owner. |
| “This app is only included from a larger package.” | Your package doesn't include the app. | Click **View packages**. |
| “The permissions of the app have changed. Please reload the page.” | The app changed while the dialog was open. | Reload the page and check the dialog again. |
