# Find the right app

Apps add content that the portal doesn't bring on its own, such as the weather, the news, or a menu board. In the store you find an app, see whether your package includes it and what it does with your data, and then install it.

> **Type:** guide
> **For:** anyone who looks for content for their displays. Installing is up to the Owner.
> **Prerequisite:** none, every role can browse the store
> **Where in the portal:** **Apps** › **Discover apps**

## What an app does

Most apps bring widgets that you place in a scene, such as a clock, a news feed, or a QR code. Some also keep data of their own, such as the menus of the **Menu board**, which you maintain on the app's page. **Posts**, **Table**, **Reviews**, **Dashboard**, and **Warning** show data from a source that you set up under **Data sources**, see [Where do your apps get their data?](/content/data-sources). A few unlock a part of the portal instead: **OneDrive**, for example, lets the library take over folders from OneDrive. The video wall has its own tile in the store, see [Set up a video wall](/displays/create-video-wall).

## Steps

### Find an app

1. Open **Apps** and click **Discover apps**.
2. Search with **Search apps**, or pick a category in the bar above the cards. **Collection**, **Status**, and **Language** narrow it down further. The collection **Ready right away**, for example, shows apps that run without a data source, account, or key. **Sort** orders by **Recommended**, **New**, **Recently updated**, or **A to Z**.
3. Whatever you have set stands as a chip above the cards. **Clear all filters** resets everything. On a phone, the filters sit behind **Filters**.

A card shows what the app puts on the display, and its footer says what it costs you: **In your package**, **From Pro**, or a monthly price for an add-on.

### Check the listing

Click a card to open the app's listing. The card on the right says where the app stands for you and offers exactly one button, such as **Install**, **Book and install**, or **View packages**. Below it, the quick facts summarize the most important points:

| Fact | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| **Runs on** | How many of your displays support the app |
| **Own data** | Whether the app keeps data areas of its own |
| **External** | **Fetches data** from an outside service, or **No connection** |
| **Setup** | How many steps it takes, or **Ready to use** |

The tabs below go into detail. **Overview** describes what the app does and what it shows without a network. **Views** shows every view as a picture. **Data & access** says what the app does with your data, **Setup** lists the steps to the display, and **Versions** shows what changed.

> **Tip:** Read **Data & access** before you install. It answers in five short blocks what the app creates, reads, adds, which outside services it talks to, and what stays when you uninstall. An app can only add data, never change or delete yours.

## What your package includes

| Class | Included | Badge on the card |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | In every package | none |
| **Pro** | From the Pro package | **Pro** |
| **Add-on** | Booked for a monthly price, in any package | **Add-on** |

In every package you get the clocks and counters, **Weather**, **Web page**, **YouTube**, **Live stream**, **Embed**, **Scrolling Text**, **QR Code**, **OneDrive**, **Posts**, **Table**, **Reviews**, and **Warning**. From Pro, the news apps, **RSS feed**, **Calendar**, **Dashboard**, **Notice board**, **Opening hours**, **Menu board**, and **Pharmacies on duty** are added.

An app outside your package stays visible, and **View packages** leads to the packages. If you move to a smaller package, installed apps show **Not in your package**. Their settings and data stay, and scenes with their widgets are skipped until a larger package unlocks them again.

## The categories when you create app content

The **What would you like to show?** dialog sorts the widgets of your installed apps more finely than the store, by origin and by purpose. An app sits in one to three categories. A category appears only once an installed app with a widget belongs to it. **OneDrive** and the video wall bring no widget and are therefore missing. How the dialog works is described in [Create, configure, and maintain app contents](/content/app-contents).

| Group | Category | Apps |
|---|---|---|
| **By origin** | **Microsoft** | Posts, Table |
| **By origin** | **Google** | Reviews, Table |
| **By origin** | **Social media** | YouTube, Reviews |
| **By origin** | **Dashboards** | Dashboard, Table |
| **By purpose** | **Weather** | Weather |
| **By purpose** | **Video and streaming** | YouTube, Live stream |
| **By purpose** | **Websites** | Web page, Embed |
| **By purpose** | **News and RSS** | Tagesschau, DER SPIEGEL, BILD, NDR, Deutschlandfunk, BBC News, RSS feed, Posts, Scrolling Text |
| **By purpose** | **Calendar** | Calendar |
| **By purpose** | **Clocks and counters** | Clock, Countdown, Day Counter, Word Clock, World Clock |
| **By purpose** | **Alerts** | Warning, Pharmacies on duty |
| **By purpose** | **Design** | Notice board, QR Code, Scrolling Text, Menu board |
| **By purpose** | **Industry** | Opening hours, Menu board, Pharmacies on duty |

## Check the result

You know which app you need and whether your package includes it. Next, [install the app](/apps/install-app) or ask the Owner to do it.

## If something goes wrong

| Symptom | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| **No app matches your selection.** | The search or the filters rule out every app. | Click **Reset filters**. |
| “This app is not offered to your organization at the moment.” | No version of the app has been released for your organization yet. | Choose another app, or ask us about it. |
| “We have switched the app off for the time being.” | The app is paused for everyone. Your settings and data stay. | Wait until we switch it on again. |
| **Apps** is missing from the navigation | Your role can't see apps. | Ask the Owner. |
